Los Angeles Lakers sign Russell Westbrook

The Los Angeles Lakers have bought Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony, while Stephen Curry has signed a new $215 million (£155m) deal with the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers lost in the first round of last season’s NBA tournament and were joined by 32-year-old Westbrook from the Washington Wizards.

They also signed a pre-contract with 37-year-old Anthony from Portland. Trailblazers

Curry, 33, has extended his Warriors contract by four years until 2026.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel, who led them to the NBA title in 2020, has also signed a contract extension.

Westbrook, who hails from Long Beach and plays college basketball at UCLA, has the most triple-double (184) in his NBA career and was the 2017 NBA MVP.

Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said: “It takes a special mentality of competitiveness to take on the role of point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers.

“We’ve seen some of the greats of all time play a role here. and now russell Westbrook came home and did that.”

Curry is a three-time NBA champion with the Warriors and won the league for the second time last season with 32 points per game.

Two-time NBA MVP, he now averages 24.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.5 assists from 762 games.
